  • The Māori Affiliation Service is provided under section 111A of the Electoral Act 1993.

    With a Māori elector’s consent, certain electoral information can be shared to help Māori maintain accurate and up-to-date affiliation registers.

    The Electoral Commission also receives updated enrolment details from other government agencies to help keep records current.

  • Iwi organisations and anyone who whakapapa Māori can use the service. 

  • Tūhono doesn’t set the requirements for tertiary education providers. Each provider has their own rules, so it’s best to check with them directly to see if a Tūhono ID meets their needs.

  • Yes. We encourage individuals to record all Iwi they affiliate with, whether or not they are actively engaged.

  • No worries, just get in touch with us and let us know your name and we’ll help you out.

  • Please contact the Electoral Commission on 0800 36 76 56 as they create the form. Once you have completed the form return to the NZ Electoral Commission, as it must be processed there before being forwarded to our office. This step allows the Electoral Commission to approve the transfer of up-to-date information to Tūhono, including your name, date of birth, address, email, and phone number.

  • Yes. This is your information you can alter as you please.

  • We are bound by the Privacy Act, which means individuals must make their own applications to register with us. The only exception is for minors, where a parent or guardian may create an account on their behalf.

  • There are two ways to register with Tūhono:

    1. Via the Electoral Commission
      If you are over the age of 17, please request a form from the Electoral Commission by calling 0800 367 656.
      Return the completed form to the NZ Electoral Commission, as it must be processed there before being forwarded to our office.
      Registering this way ensures that any updates you make to your contact details with the Electoral Commission are automatically reflected in our system. The information shared is limited to your name, date of birth, address, email, and phone number.

    2. Online Registration
      You can also register online at www.tuhono.net/register
      Under       ‘Join now’, you will see two options: ‘I have a Tūhono ID’ and ‘I do not have a Tūhono ID’.
      Please select ‘I do not have a Tūhono ID’ and complete the form.
      Please note, if your contact details change later, you will need to update them manually through our website.

  • To the best of our knowledge, there is no single organisation or government/ministry that holds an individuals full whakapapa or genealogy records. This work must be carried out by individuals and whānau. In many cases Iwi will have contacts that work with whakapapa from there respective rohe. We highly recommend making contact with these tohunga whakapapa through your Iwi. Please see our resources page for help.

  • Verification is done with the Iwi . Each Iwi will have their own way of verifying members

  • Yes, this is your record.

  • Generally most Iwi require a person to provide 3 generations of whakapapa (genealogy) that links the person to a recognised tupuna from that Iwi. In many cases Iwi will have contacts that work with whakapapa from there respective rohe. We highly recommend making contact with these tohunga whakapapa through your Iwi.

  • Not all iwi are listed on the Electoral Act as they maybe going through a process to become formally recognised. Please select my main Iwi is not listed.

  • Access to the Tūhono data base is limited with only a handful of employees allowed to access it. Tūhono shares your information only with the Iwi organisations you have selected. This includes your name, date of birth, address, email, and phone number. You may also choose to share any whakapapa information at your discretion.

  • If you have registered through Electoral Commission, Tūhono will be notified.
